The Sunpak Auto 544 is a handle-mount external flash unit designed primarily for film SLRs
It uses thyristor autoexposure circuitry, so it measures reflected light from the scene and cuts off the flash when enough light has been delivered - not true TTL But auto metering that works if you understand guide numbers and aperture settings
It’s basically a beefy, simple, manual / auto strobe head with a swivel / tilt for aiming
If you want cheap manual flash power for small studios or bounce lighting, it’s great
Key Specs:
- Classic thyristor auto-control: flash duration/power trims itself based on light return
- Guide number ~140 at ISO 100 (feet) — decent juice for portraits/indoor work back in the day
- Manual control down to 1/64 power for fill or reduced output
- Tilt & swivel head to bounce light off ceilings/walls
- Runs on 8 AA batteries or external packs/brackets you’d find with vintage strobes
- Solid strobe power for its era — strong enough for flash fill and bounce
- Simple operation if you’re comfortable with non-TTL exposure
- Works fine on older film SLRs that don’t need TTL
- Can be used with digital cameras off-camera on a cord or with a proper safe trigger
